Dogs

BENEFITS

Dogs provide companionship. They are loyal and provide their owners with love (Walsh, 2011).  One advantage of having a dog is they require regular exercise, which in turn, benefits the owner, as exercise is a vital factor for healthy living.  Dogs can also offer protection for the family or may be used as guard dogs for business.

 COSTS

The costs of owning a dog includes the initial purchase cost, which can for some breeds range from $ 800-$ 1500 (Burkes Backyard, 2003).  Another expense that needs to be considered is the cost of vaccinations which cost approximately $ 170.00. As a guide you should allow a budget of between $ 1245 and $ 3010 in the first year of owning a dog (RSPCA New South Wales, 2013).

SUITABILITY

Dogs need a bit of love, attention and moderate grooming (dependent on the breed). Not all dogs are suited to everyone’s lifestyles (i.e. family with new born baby, or frequent travelers) and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time, or after another pet in the home passes away (RSPCA Victoria, n.d).

MAINTENANCE

Caring for a dog involves a lot of responsibility, as you will be the sole provider for your dog’s social, dietary and health-related needs. Proper and regular  veterinary care is extremely important, as this will assist your dog in living a healthy life. Prepare yourself for 10-15 years of care and protection, and you will benefit from a rewarding and loyal companionship.
